Barb McLean, Cultural Services Officer
North Vancouver Recreation & Culture Commission

Barb brings her passion for culture, people and community to her work at the North Vancouver Recreation & Culture Commission every day. Whether she’s searching for locations for the Pianos on the Street program, coordinating North Shore Culture Days celebration, or collaborating on new programming, Barb is living (and promoting) the “C” (culture) in NVRC.

A violinist from an early age, Barb originally saw herself working in therapeutic recreation but a co-op job with an inner-city arts centre changed all that and she went on to pursue her degree in Arts Administration and Music Performance. She’s worked with professional orchestras in Vancouver and Winnipeg, and with various artistic and government organizations, including the Banff Centre, the Open Learning Agency, Knowledge Network, BC Arts Council and the City of Vancouver’s Cultural Services department. Her experience includes music programming, artist management, media production and marketing, grants administration, and helping arts groups expand their potential. Prior to starting with NVRC, she worked with 2010 Legacies Now overseeing funding programs designed to strengthen arts, heritage and cultural organizations across BC.

Barb’s enthusiasm for working with community groups and the potential for cultural animation and diversity in the civic sphere is contagious and based on her deep values and commitment to arts and culture.

“Pianos on the Street has struck a chord with the North Vancouver residents! A focal point at popular gathering places, the colourful pianos are a catalyst for drawing people together and sparking conversations between strangers. They provide a friendly performance platform for pianists of all ages and abilities – inspiring some to pursue a new, or renewed, passion for the piano.”
