Jude Hannah is a Surrey-based artist and the founder of Renewton.ca, a grassroots community initiative which began in 2011 advocating for revitalization of the downtown and south Newton areas of Surrey.
In 2014, Jude organized the painting of Newton’s first ‘Pacey’s Pianos’ sponsored street piano in “The Grove”, an area adjacent to the main transit loop in downtown Newton.

“It was an amazing experience. For that one week, while we painted every afternoon, we had such positive feedback from commuters and from families in the neighbourhood who happened to be walking by. People were thrilled to learn that a street piano was going to be in The Grove all summer long.
There was an official launch party and concert . As the sun was setting on a gorgeous summer evening we were treated to a performance by professional musicians. Everyone who attended described the event as magical and just what the area needed!
For me, the best part of the street piano project was seeing the delighted faces of young children who sat down at the piano and just had fun pounding out a few notes.”
Organization
Newton Business Improvement Association

The Newton BIA is made up of a group of property and business owners who are passionate about improving business in the Newton Town Centre.

The Newton BIA believes placemaking is important in bringing community together. Pianos on the Street is a great placemaking tool as music is always a great way to connect people. The piano is located at the BIA’s park-it located on 137th St., an outdoor wooden patio with tables and chairs, the perfect place to enjoy the sunshine and play piano. Pianos on the Street is key to the Newton BIA’s “Newton Days” events, specifically ‘Nooner Wednesdays’. Nooner is a weekly lunch meetup encouraging people working and living in the area to come out and have lunch together whilst listening to music from various pianists throughout the weeks.
